From the south A cold breath unfurls across the winter land Thin, white undulating coils of iced air flow As Hau Tonga whips his barbed tail Sending sharp, edged blades across exposed skin A raw scream heard on the edge of hearing Hau Tonga’s territorial cry The winter wail of lost souls As blanched lines of frayed cloud Hide the sun’s distant face Winter ice gains weight Hau Tonga dances in the cold light As he weaves his sinewy length around me I walk the darkened landscape In a never ending journey Of cold caresses and iced wind kisses.
