Time and Change

Helen

“Transience is the force of time that makes a ghost of every experience. There was never a dawn, regardless how beautiful or promising, that did not grow into a noontime. There was never a noon that did not fall into afternoon. There was never an afternoon that did not fade toward evening. There never was a day yet that did not get buried in the graveyard of the night. In this way transience makes a ghost out of everything that happens to us.” ― John O'Donohue, Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom

Last week two things happened that made me refelect on pain and sorrow. The first was an article I read about the rape and crimes against Yazidi women and girls in Iraq. This article generated a feeling of pain for women who are still in this day and age being treated barbarically. It also generated a sense of helplessness because the world I inhabit is so vastly different from the world these woman and girls are forced to exist within. I don't have the ability to change the state in which they endure. The only light I can carry in my heart is that the world does change with time and my hope is that out of this cauldron will come a stronger group of women.

The second thing that occurred was the death of one of my bantams, Cleo. Now this, in the large scale was not a big issue and it wasn't grief I felt but rather a state of sorrow. The death of any living being is a loss to the world, the qualities and characteristics of that living being are no longer part of the fabric of the world and the space in my yard taken up by this funny little chicken was not longer filled. So to honour her life I created this image.
