The morning glow of peach, pink or lemon was absent from the horizon

Instead, the sky was a deep, dark indigo

The only sound breaking dawn’s quietude

The susurration of tyres on asphalt

Beneath the concrete and houses of the city

I heard the deep silence of the world

In this dark dawn

The only movement, the cars rushing past

Above, the indigo lightened to a deep steel grey

And a few raindrops fell

As I alone walked through this tenebrous, waking day

And saw its subdued beauty
