Overheard

Writer's picture: Helen GaudinHelen Gaudin

I stood in the line at the coffee shop idly listening to the people around me.

‘Are you coming to the movies Wednesday’ from a young girl ahead of me.

‘Jason stop wriggling around, just stand still’ a frazzled mother with toddler and baby.

‘You know you can come and stay with me’ I heard a young woman seated at the table to my left say.

‘I can’t leave I don’t have any money’ replied her companion; a thin young woman with a black eye.

My attention focused in on the two of them and the other conversations faded away.

‘Sachelle you have to get away from him, he is not good for you. Today you have a black eye and bruised ribs. What will happen the next time he is unhappy with something that has happened in his day? He is turning you into his punching bag’ her friend replied.

‘He loves me Annie, things just got a little out hand and he was really sorry afterward.’

‘We said we would never be in this position Sachelle. We promised each other we would never accept being beaten up on. You know it is wrong. You have seen it in your mother and sister. You know you have to stop this right now at the beginning.’

‘Annie, you don’t understand the stresses he is under. He loves me he really does’ Sachelle replied as she grabbed her bag and stood up.

‘Sachelle don’t go back home, just come and stay with me tonight’ Annie pleaded.

‘You never did like him. He said you were jealous’ Sachelle had the last word as she walked away from the table.

Annie stared into the middle distance as she picked up her coffee and took a sip.

I had reached the counter. ‘A double soy cappuccino and a blueberry muffin’ I ordered as I listened to the babble of conversations going on around me.
